Teach A Kid To Fish
On Saturday, June 8th, 2002 under a sun filled sky with a light breeze
on the lake, Southaven Park was the place to be to celebrate National
Fishing Week.
The Federation conducted two Teach A Kid To Fish workshops. The event
was again a tremendous success with over 130 children along with many
adults attending and participating in the workshops. The workshop
consisted of Basic Knot Tying, Fishing & Boating Safety, Catch &
Release, Fish Identification, Bait Types, Casting and Fly-Rodding.
After each workshop the youngsters participated in a raffle for
additional goodies. Suffolk County Parks, Recreation and Conservation
Commissioner Peter Scully was on hand for the drawing. Afterwards, the
kids were able to practice what had learned at the children's fishing
pond, catching lots of fish. This is what it is all about folks! The
look on these youngsters face when they bait their own hook and catch
their first fish is very gratifying to all of us.
The days event were made possible by a cooperative effort from Suffolk
County Parks, Suffolk County Legislator Fred Towles, New York State DEC,
National Marine Fisheries Service, US Fish & Wildlife Service, New York
Sportfishing Federation, New York Fishing Tackle Trade Association, Long
Island Beach Buggy Association, Eastern Flyrodders, and the Sportfishing
Education Center.
The workshops are designed as a hands-on program for children ages 8 -14
years old. The concept of the TAKTF is to provide basic fishing
fundamentals while instilling a greater sense of stewardship of our
precious marine environment. The Federation began this program, not just
as an education tool, but also to show how fishing can be a positive
activity enjoyed by the entire family, instead of non-productive
activities so many children face every day.
